CATHEDRAL LIFE AND

Ministry

Life at the Cathedral is centred on faith, connection, and the celebration of life’s milestones. Music, learning, and community support all play an important role in this life.

COMMUNITY

Children and Youth

Children and young people are fully included in the life of our Cathedral and are welcomed as full members of our community.

We offer a range of activities to support their growth in faith and connection with others:

  • Little Fishes – music and movement for preschool children and their parents. 10 am on Thursdays. Contact Dianne via deanswarden@stpeter.org.nz

  • Junior Choir – meets Fridays after school and leads Sunday worship four times a year. 10 am on Sundays. Contact Yvonne, email admin@stpeter.org.nz

  • BYC (Breakfast Youth Church) – runs alongside our 8 am Communion. Contact Zavier via youth@stpeter.org.nz

  • Young Church – runs alongside our 10 am Choral Communion, run by Suzie Abdale and Shirley Scott.

Groups and gatherings

The Cathedral is a place where people come together in many different ways.

Regular gatherings are an important part of Cathedral life, from social groups to choir rehearsals, a young adults' group, bell ringing, monthly cantatas, and afternoon teas prior to Vespers. There are also practical working bees that help care for and maintain this special place.

The Cathedral and Cathedral Centre also host a wide range of community groups and activities, including twelve-step programmes, tramping groups, art classes, and other regular gatherings.

SUPPORT

Twelve Step Programmes

The Cathedral Centre hosts regular twelve-step programme meetings, providing an important space for support and connection.

REFLECT

Sanctuary course

The Sanctuary Course equips churches as they seek to become sanctuaries where people with mental health challenges feel safe, supported, and a sense of belonging.

It is designed to encourage compassionate understanding, reflection, and learning in a supportive environment.

Whether you are personally interested or looking to take part in meaningful discussion with others, you are welcome to explore the course.

LIFE EVENTS

Supporting you through life’s significant moments with faith and care.

Baptisms

Baptism is an expression of faith and commitment to follow the way of Jesus Christ. It marks a step in the Christian journey and welcomes a person into the family of God and the life of the Church.

For infants, baptism is made in the faith of their family, godparents, and church community, who promise to support them as they grow in faith.

More information

  • The first step is to attend services at the church where you are considering having your child baptised.

  • For a child’s baptism, at least one parent must be baptised. If the other parent is not baptised, they must be supportive and not object.

  • If a child is old enough to answer the baptism questions, they will also be asked to express their own desire to be baptised.

  • The promises made at baptism are a commitment to living out our faith in daily life and spiritual practice. This includes being part of a church community, so it is important to find a church that feels right for you. The Cathedral is just one option.

  • On Sundays, we offer a said service at 8 am, which usually has Breakfast Youth Church running alongside it during term time. We also have a 10 am choral service, which includes a junior church during term time.

  • We look forward to meeting you at the Cathedral. After you have attended a few services, we can talk more about baptism preparation.
