Lots of people get in behind the Hamilton Combined Christian Foodbank Trust, It’s been a part of our Cathedral tradition for many years. Each week our people donate food from their pantries to build the resource which then is collected by the trust and sorted for dispersal to those in need. We are part of the churches and schools across the city who donate and support this work. Ruth who manages the service is grateful for the support we all give even our schools are involved, Diocesan school and St Paul’s. While they have criteria for who receives parcel it’s important to know that if we need help with food parcels we can ring and speak to Ruth who will respond to our request.
Due to the challenges of COVID-19 the trust has entered into a two-year relationship with the Hamilton City Council via central government to support those in greatest need across the city to ensure easy access for food parcels. During COVID they were delivering up to 60 food parcels a day, now it is more manageable at around 30 parcel a day but Ruth expects demand to increase as wage subsidies come off and an increasing number of people will lose jobs. What she’s noticed recently is that as families have lost jobs and are unable to afford rents families have moved in together to share the financial burden. Sometimes she finds requests coming in for families of 13-15 living in one three-bedroom home.
Please remember to be generous with your donations, every week every little bit helps. Jesus says “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” Matthew 25.40
